Features
Threadshift keeps everything Redlib does: it fetches public Reddit content on the server and serves it without ads, a login wall or Reddit's scripts. On top of that it adds the features below, each built as an extension. Visitors turn them on or off at /settings; admins choose the defaults for new browsers (see Settings).
Reading
| Feature | What it does | Code |
|---|---|---|
| Classic layout | Compact listings with vote arrows and thumbnails, the subreddit sidebar, and your subscriptions in the bar across the top, like old.reddit.com | ext/classic |
| Favorites | The ★ next to a subreddit's name pins it to the front of the subreddit bar and suggests it first in search | ext/favorites |
| Search shortcuts | In any search box, !s or r/ searches subreddits and !u or u/ searches users. "Suggest subreddits while typing" drops the prefix; Enter still searches posts | ext/search |
| Subreddit directory | Popular, new and NSFW subreddits at /subreddits, with name search | ext/directory |
| Faster pages | In Chromium browsers, a link starts loading when you hover it (Speculation Rules). A subreddit page fetches its posts while the subreddit's info is still loading | ext/classic/server.rs |
Media
Code: ext/media. Each setting is at /settings, and admins can change the default for new browsers.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Grid view | off | Media cards instead of the classic list |
| Full-page grid | off | With grid view: no sidebar, edge-to-edge square tiles |
| Show posts | all | All posts, or only media, images or videos |
| Expand all media | off | Opens every preview in a listing |
| Open media in a viewer | on | Full screen; videos play with sound; ← and → move between posts |
| Play videos on hover | on | A muted preview while the pointer is over a video |
| Autoplay videos on screen | off | Muted, and pauses when scrolled away |
| Infinite scroll | off | Loads the next page automatically |
Filtering
| Feature | What it does | Code |
|---|---|---|
| Political posts | "Hide political posts" removes listing posts whose subreddit, site, flair or title is political, including politicians' names and political words. It can hide a harmless post | ext/politics |
| Content filters | Redlib's own: hide subreddits and users, show or blur NSFW posts, blur spoilers. Under Content filters at /settings | Redlib |
Layout editor
/settings/layout moves and resizes the page as you watch: the page edges and width, the subreddit bar (including which subscriptions it shows, A to Z or in your order), the header, logo, tabs, header links and search box. Changes save in your browser and apply before the page first paints. Narrow windows keep their own layout unless you turn on "Also change the phone layout". Code: ext/layout.
Privacy
- Your browser only talks to Threadshift. The server fetches from Reddit and proxies every image and video.
- Signed out, preferences live in your browser (cookies and local storage); Backup at
/settingsexports them for another browser. Signed in, they're your account's, on every device (see Accounts). - Instances stay out of search engines:
robots.txtdisallows everything, pages carrynoindex, and known crawlers get a 403. SetREDLIB_ROBOTS_DISABLE_INDEXING=offto allow indexing. - Optional accounts belong to your instance and have nothing to do with Reddit accounts.
